Resolutions
“Buy less, choose well, make it last.
– Vivienne Westwood
I don’t believe in New Year’s resolutions, but this year I have given myself a New Year’s challenge; to buy less, choose well and make it last. I want to learn how to live lightly.
50 years ago we spent 10 percent of our monthly income on clothes, now we spend less than 5%, but our wardrobes are twice the size.
I want to become even more conscious of who made my clothes and the true cost of producing them. Behind every garment I wear there’s a person. Looking at the price tag, we should ask ourselves; how much the person making it was paid.
My challenge will mean I will seek out products from second hand stores and from independent designers and makers, producing products that are ethically sourced at a high quality. To buy less will not necessarily mean to spend less, but each piece will be bought at it’s true value.
To make conscious decisions when buying, to carefully select and to choose well, will be my motto for 2019.
